I'm bored. So when I'm bored, I host a contest. For no reason whatsoever except I'm bored. So here's the contest...
What do you like to do besides knitting or fiber related? Nothing fiber related, zippo, nada, zilch. Personally I love to read and geocache but then again, I'm a geek.
Please post your answers here by 9/21. If you link on your blog, extra entry. Two prizes--one for a random drawing and the other for the strangest. Please no posting about how you like cook butt naked or anything that will cause me nightmares.
The prize for the random drawing will be five skeins of Rowan denim (100% cotton). Beautiful blue. It shrinks in length and fades just like jeans. For the strangest entry, a surprise!

I love to read, cook and bake (which counts because it's only fibre-related if I use whole wheat flour, right?), hike or cross-country ski, listen to music, play a flute, dance (by myself because I don't know how to dance properly), fold origami, and do math problems (without the time pressure of a homework deadline, please).

ReplyDeleteI guess you could count my TV watching as a hobby too. I have 2 Tivos and sometimes they are both full. Although, I am trying to be more selective.
And amusement parks. Love roller coasters, and have a trip planned next month.

Nifty contest ... non fibre hobbies? Hmmm - currently my main activity is bringing up a baby Valley Bulldog puppy - possibley the hardest breed I've encountered to housebreak! On weekdays I go in and out at least 6 times in the morning, and 3 at lunch, plus at least 10 times each evening - I guess my hobby would be called "Stair climbing Go pee Go Pee - please go pee" ?

I train in Isshinryu karate, and I also enjoy photography. For the strangest, maybe keeping snakes would do. I currently have seven of them. Yes, I talk to them, too.

ReplyDeleteOnce upon a time, before we had kids, I used to go to science fiction conventions. I also used to do live action role-playing (dress up as a fantasy character, go to a park, and do the swordfights and spells thing). Weird enough for you?
ReplyDeleteNowadays, my weirdest activities seem to be around my kid's poops and pees as he's in the middle of potty-training.
I cook and bake, although I am not sure those are hobbies. But making fancy chocolates I think is a hobby, and I love doing that. I love reading with my husband, we read out loud to each other, and that's a true favourite. I love going to book sales, finding children's books. And I love ,love going to IKEA. - anywhere in the world. Did you know that in Oslo, Norway, there is a free bus going from the city centre to IKEA? Very handy! :)

I love to sew, quilt, photography, read, cook, make soap, candles, garden, knit, spin, dye, scrapbook, bead, hike, backpack, scuba....the list could go on but those are the major ones! (i know there are a few fiber ones in there!) I hope your not so bored listening to us ramble on!!

ReplyDeletenon-fiber-hobby: Trying to become a hippy. I am 23 and love everything hippy( minus pot-I have 4kids 4 and under- drugs just would not work.) I like cooking, sewing, growing plants, and trying to become more mellow.
This will not win the strangest award, but I love reading, playing/watching soccer, watching my kids play nicely together (when it actually happens), and reality TV! :)

I love to read (I'm a dork too) and have a budding interest in photography (that is only fiber related as knitting sparked the interest). I also love to hike in the mountains (but I live near the beach in FL) so we schedule vacations to include hiking.

Hi! I'm coming from WiKnit.blogspot.com. I play goalie on a women's ice hockey team (The Iron Maidens :). I'm also an avid reader, when I'm not being crafty or on the ice I've got my nose stuck in a book.
ReplyDeleteI am compulsively creative, and find it very hard to participate in activities that don't have a creative aspect. The strongest example of this is cooking. I never enjoyed cooking when I was young, when I'd have my grandmother standing over my shoulder and nagging about what to do or not do with the food. Following a recipe is unpleasant for me. When I finally got old enough and was cooking for only myself (or just became daring enough to cook for others and not care if they hated it), I realized how much fun cooking can be. Now when I look at recipes, it's only as inspiration for a general type of dish, and I'm the one writing recipes for others to follow to the letter.
ReplyDeleteMy earliest creative hobby, and one that has stuck with me most consistently, is photography. I started out with a little Mickey-matic 110 camera when I was 8 years old (20 years ago, *gasp*), and I've always loved taking photographs. It became much more enjoyable once I got a digital camera though, as I gained more freedom to experiment and take however many pictures I wanted without concern for developing/printing costs. On my recent vacation to Washington D.C., I racked up 1,200 photographs in under a week.
I write occasionally, with a tendency toward poetry and plays. I love creating mix CDs that tell a story. My intended career path is a creative one, which most people pursue only at the hobby level: theatre. I'm a bit indecisive about what I actually want to do, as my biggest interest is acting but I'd rather do that on television than on stage, and I've dabbled in a little bit of everything. Stage management and sound design are both interesting.
The only one of my hobbies that I can think of that isn't all that creative is genealogy research. I haven't focused on it much lately, but every once in a while it sparks my interest again.

Hmmm...how about watercolor painting...or drawing...or writing poems about my growing-up-years...or researching family history...or restoring old photos with Photoshop C3...or collecting box turtle shells on walks in the woods around my house... or pottery...or, if nothing else comes to mind, just sitting on a rock beside the creek in my front yard letting the creative well refill and pondering my most totally awesome wonderful life.

Taking pictures, going on roadtrips, tracking down part for our weird cars, installing them :), general car restoration (I spent a lot of time sanding paint on my newest taxi, you can see it on my blog). Also we built a cat tower like an Ent forest. I have rescue cats and work with rescue bunnies (mine just died). And I poke holes in people for a living, since I'm an acupuncturist.

Very humorous actually I combine my two favorite hobbies together - Knitting and playing World of Warcraft. Not familiar with that? it's an MMPORG (massive multiplayer online role game). I'm part of a guild, and when people ask what's up - I'm always telling them about my work in progress lol -- There can be a lot of "wait" time in the game, and hence I knit while I play.

hmmm...besides collecting more yarn than I can possibly knit in a lifetime? I read everything from blogs, to novels, to cereal boxes. I devise games for 2 golden retrievers (mine), a beagle/basset mix, and a bossy whippet mix (the granddogs)to keep them active and not digging or stealing from my knitting bags. I volunteer with reading work at the local elementary school. And I work puzzles and play on-line games-especially the "Shift" series.
